The Hogans Pocket Landfill Gas Project is a progressive, long-term collaboration between LGI and Mackay Regional Council, demonstrating how advanced engineering can instantly optimise environmental outcomes.
Commencing on-site in late March 2026, LGI executed a comprehensive, multi-stage infrastructure modernisation program designed to maximise methane capture, ensure precise environmental compliance, and future-proof the region’s asset management.
To achieve this, LGI managed an end-to-end upgrade of the site’s biogas management system. Initial works focused on optimising the existing infrastructure with advanced liquid management systems and upgraded flow measurement tools to eradicate blockages and stabilise vacuum pressures. Following this, LGI significantly expanded the well field by drilling and connecting over 30 new deep vertical gas extraction wells. This expanded network was supported by extensive new pipeline infrastructure and connected to a brand-new, custom-designed LGI1000 enclosed flare.
The engineering impact was immediate. Following the completion of the expansion works in June 2026, the volume of extracted landfill gas (LFG) more than doubled within just two months. This drastic increase in efficiency highlights the accuracy of LGI’s design, drilling execution, and continuous system optimisation.
Critically, this is a voluntary biogas capture and abatement project. By proactively trapping methane at the source, this partnership significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves local air quality, generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs), and supports Australia’s national transition toward net-zero emissions.
Project Snapshot
Biogas Capture and Abatement from Landfill Project
We expedite the transition to renewables with clean energy and carbon abatement solutions. Carbon credits enable a commercially viable project to create additional abatement.
Long-Term Partnership
A voluntary, long-term contract with Mackay Regional Council to recover and beneficially use biogas and abate carbon from the Hogans Pocket Landfill. This improves air quality, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and contributes to the local economy.
Commercially Viable Abatement
While there is no regulatory requirement to capture biogas at this scale, the generation of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) enables additional, verifiable carbon abatement from a commercially viable flaring project under the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF).
Upgraded Biogas Management System
LGI successfully executed a multi-stage infrastructure modernisation program, designing and installing a bespoke biogas management system and enclosed flare. This upgrade successfully doubled the site’s landfill gas flows within months of commencing onsite.
End-to-End Management
LGI collaborates closely with the Council and continues total management of the system, including monitoring, reporting, maintenance, and expansion, to ensure maximum safety, ongoing performance, and streamlined ACCU generation at minimal cost to the Council.

- Voluntary Climate Action producing verified ACCUs.
Innovative Green Integration: The BeneVap Pilot
While the primary objective of this project was maximising landfill gas capture and destruction, the upgrade also provided an elegant solution to support other landfill operations.
In parallel with LGI’s works, Mackay Regional Council trialled a BeneVap leachate management system to minimise leachate volumes. Demonstrating the flexibility of LGI’s infrastructure, the BeneVap unit called “Opal” was fully integrated directly into the landfill gas system. Instead of consuming expensive and high-emission diesel fuel, Opal uses LGI’s freshly captured landfill gas as its primary energy source. This integration offers Council an incredibly economical, eco-friendly, and circular solution to liquid waste management.
