Former Sydney rubbish tip to house battery capable of powering 1500 homes

LGI’s latest clean energy milestone recently featured in The Sydney Morning Herald, highlighting our $20 million, 12MW / 24MWh battery project at the former Belrose landfill in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Developed in partnership with the NSW Government’s Waste Asset Management Corporation (WAMC), the standalone battery system utilises the site’s existing grid connection to capture excess renewable energy during peak daytime generation and dispatch it back to the network when demand spikes in the evening.

Speaking with the Herald, LGI Chief Executive Jarryd Doran described the Belrose facility as a prime example of the “missing middle” in Australia’s energy transition, bridging the gap between household batteries and large utility-scale storage. By repurposing closed landfill sites into grid-stabilising assets, LGI is demonstrating how legacy infrastructure across hundreds of sites nationwide can be transformed to support a reliable, zero-carbon grid.
