Innovative gas management integrated with major capping works to improve a community asset
The Tuncurry Waste Management Centre has served the MidCoast region for decades, officially stopping the acceptance of waste in 2021. As the site transitioned into a rehabilitation phase, MidCoast Council sought to address legacy methane emissions and odour impacts through a sophisticated gas extraction solution.
The implementation at Tuncurry required exceptional coordination between contractors. In 2025, LGI’s field teams worked side-by-side with capping contractors to drill gas wells and install an LGI250 flare. This collaboration ensured the liner could be fusion-welded to the wells, creating a total seal that minimises leakage and maximises capture efficiency.
The flare became operational in early April 2026, transforming a closed landfill into a controlled carbon abatement project at next to zero cost to ratepayers. By capturing and destroying biogas that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere, the Council is not only meeting its climate objectives but also creating a revenue stream.
The Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) generated can be surrendered to offset internal Council emissions or sold to fund a revolving energy fund for future local renewable projects.
Project Snapshot
Long term contract with MidCoast Council to recover and beneficially use biogas from the Tuncurry Waste Management Centre. This improves local air quality, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to the local economy.
There is no regulatory requirement to capture biogas, however ACCUs enable additional carbon abatement (above its 30% baseline) from a commercially viable flaring project under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Method.
In 2025, LGI designed and installed a customised biogas management system, including an LGI 500 biogas flare for this landfill. Council benefits from this bespoke biogas management system at no cost to Council.
LGI collaborated closely with the Council regarding the design & installation of the system. Future operations and maintenance of the biogas management system, including the monitoring and reporting services will be provided by LGI’s in-house team.

“There was a really good collaboration between our capping contractors and LGI’s gas field team to make sure that the gas field was integrated into the final site cap. The fact that LGI take on the technical and financial risk is a massive plus for us.”

Turnkey Management
Early gas production at Tuncurry is encouraging, creating the potential for additional abatement through the installation of a larger LGI500 flare in the future.
By integrating advanced gas extraction with a major capping project, the Tuncurry site demonstrates best-practice legacy management for the region.
