The Tumut Landfill Biogas Project is a proactive collaboration between LGI and Bellettes Tumut, a long-standing local waste operator serving the region for over 35 years. The partnership demonstrates how privately operated regional landfills can address environmental concerns by capturing and permanently destroying methane emissions, with active landfill gas management.
In 2024, LGI designed and installed a bespoke biogas management system, which includes LGI designed and built enclosed, CER compliant flaring units and supporting infrastructure. The comprehensive system enables the safe, continuous capture and combustion of methane gas, helping to prevent odour and improve air quality.
This project provides measurable climate benefits while responding to community concerns about landfill odours. Ongoing flare and gas extraction infrastructure upgrades occur as landfilling continues to support the site’s long-term environmental performance.
Project Snapshot
Long-term contract with Bellettes Tumut to recover and beneficially use biogas and abate carbon from this small regional landfill. This improves air quality, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to the local economy.
Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) enable additional carbon abatement (above its 30% baseline) from a commercially viable flaring project under the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF)
In 2024 LGI installed a bespoke biogas management system, initially with an LGI series enclosed biogas flare and more recently with two. Bellettes Tumut, a local waste management company which has served the Tumut community for over 35 years, benefits from this bespoke biogas management system at minimal cost.
LGI collaborates closely with Bellettes Tumut regarding the design, installation, operations and maintenance of the biogas management system, including the monitoring and reporting services provided.

“We are proud to be supporting the Bellettes Tumut initiative to significantly reduce methane emissions and odours created from the waste management services they provide for the local community – with active landfill gas management.”
– Dr Jessica North, LGI
“We are a local business supporting the community, having served the Tumut and surrounding communities for over 35 years with waste disposal services. This project supports our commitment to providing environmentally sustainable services in and around the Tumut Region.”
– Martin Hay, Bellettes Tumut
Over the past year, LGI’s biogas recovery system has delivered strong environmental performance, while also helping to address odour concerns raised by the local community. Ongoing improvements to flare capacity and extraction infrastructure are designed to support even greater outcomes in the future.
A Local Partnership Driving Real Change
Bellettes Tumut and LGI have collaborated to bring advanced methane capture technology to this privately operated regional site.
LGI continues to manage the system end-to-end, including design, installation, reporting, and maintenance, to ensure safe and efficient performance aligned with Emission Reduction Fund standards.
The system delivers:
-
Capture of landfill gas with measurable carbon abatement
-
Reduction in odour and airborne pollutants
-
ACCUs to underpin a commercially viable model
-
Future-proofed infrastructure with planned flare and well upgrades
-
Improved air quality for nearby residents
-
Voluntary emissions reductions beyond the regulatory baseline
Looking Ahead
With LGI’s continued support, Tumut’s biogas system will be further expanded to improve gas capture and reduce odour impacts. Planned upgrades include a higher-capacity flare and additional gas wells, helping to future-proof the site. This partnership represents a practical, scalable model for how private operators can lead on climate action and community wellbeing, even in regional areas.
